Volvo has announced a recall of certain 2024 model year XC40 vehicles due to an issue with the left rear turn indicator that fails to properly warn other drivers of the intention to turn or switch lanes. This poses an increased risk of accidents and is prompting Volvo to update the software in the Central Electronic Module (CEM) on over 17,000 potentially affected vehicles in the United States.
If you own one of these vehicles and have experienced issues with the left turn signal, read on to understand more about the recall and your options if your Volvo XC40 is displaying concerning symptoms.

Problems with Volvo XC40 Left Turn Indicator
According to the official NHTSA recall report, the issue stems from a diagnostic function misinterpreting the initial current to the left rear turn signal bulb upon activation as a short-to-ground condition. As a result, the left rear turn indicator will fail to function properly. This means other drivers will not be warned of your intention to turn or change lanes, increasing the risk of an accident.
A “left turn indicator malfunction” warning message may appear in the Driver Information Module (DIM) if the vehicle detects the issue. However, since the turn signal may still seem to be working from inside the car, this provides little useful alert to the driver about the external signal failure.
Volvo reports that the recall population includes certain 2024 model year XC40 vehicles built from October 13, 2022, through December 20, 2023. Only vehicles produced after a December 20, 2023 software update have the corrected version that resolves the flaw.
What to Do if Your Volvo XC40 Has Problems
If you own one of the potentially affected vehicles, be alert for any issues with the left turn indicator when operating your Volvo XC40. Lack of illumination when activating the signal or failure of other drivers to properly react could signify it is not working. You may also see a warning light or message about a turn signal malfunction.
Volvo says it will notify owners by the end of February 2024 about taking their vehicle to a dealer to have the software updated, free of charge. This repair will also eventually be available through an over-the-air (OTA) update.
In the meantime, use extra caution when changing lanes or making turns. Since other motorists may not realize your intentions, be prepared for unexpected responses. Avoid attempting risky lane changes and anticipate reduced reaction times from surrounding traffic.
