Tesla, a trailblazer in the electric vehicle industry, has announced a significant recall affecting an estimated 2,193,869 vehicles. This recall spans several models, including the 2012-2023 Model S, 2016-2024 Model X, 2017-2023 Model 3, 2019-2024 Model Y, and the newly introduced 2024 Cybertruck.
Tesla Initiates Recall Due to Incorrect Font Size on Instrument Panel Warning Lights
The issue at hand is the incorrect font size used for the Brake, Park, and Antilock Brake System (ABS) warning lights on the instrument panel.
This font size does not comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) numbers 105 and 135, related to “Hydraulic and Electric Brake Systems” and “Light Vehicle Brake Systems,” respectively.
Why This Recall Matters
Visibility and clarity of warning lights are crucial for driving safety. The smaller-than-required font size can make it challenging for drivers to notice and react appropriately to critical safety information.
This oversight increases the risk of a crash, putting the safety of Tesla drivers, their passengers, and other road users at risk.
Tesla’s Solution
To address this issue, Tesla has initiated an over-the-air (OTA) software update. This update is designed to correct the font size of the affected warning lights, ensuring they meet the necessary safety standards.
The OTA update is being rolled out free of charge to owners of the affected vehicles, starting from late January 2024. Tesla aims to complete the update process swiftly, with owner notification letters expected to be mailed by March 30, 2024.
