Hyundai Motor America has recently announced a safety recall for certain 2022-2023 Genesis GV70, GV80, G80, and G90 vehicles to address an issue with the low-pressure fuel pump that could potentially lead to a vehicle fire risk. Owners of affected Genesis models should watch for recall notifications so this critical repair can be completed.
What is the Fuel Pump Issue Causing Fire Risk?
Hyundai has determined that the low-pressure fuel pump assemblies in the subject vehicles may contain impellers that can deform under high ambient temperatures or certain environmental conditions. This deformation of the impeller could cause interference with the fuel pump housing, resulting in mechanical resistance that can lead to a shutdown of the fuel pump.
A shutdown of the fuel pump restricts fuel flow to the engine, causing a sudden loss of power or engine stall while driving. This sudden loss of motive power increases the risk of a crash or fire.
What Models Are Affected by the Genesis Fuel Pump Recall?
The following Genesis vehicles are affected by the potential fuel pump failure and fire risk:
- 2022-2023 Genesis GV70 (12,763 units)
- 2022-2023 Genesis GV80 (14,414 units)
- 2022-2023 Genesis G80 (2,899 units)
- 2022-2023 Genesis G90 (1,364 units)
A total of 31,440 Genesis vehicles are potentially impacted by this recall related to the low-pressure fuel pump assemblies.
Can I Still Drive My Genesis if it is Affected?
Hyundai recommends that owners of the recalled Genesis models park their vehicles outside and away from structures or flammable materials until the recall repair is performed. Dealers will inspect the low-pressure fuel pump assembly and replace it if necessary at no cost to owners.
While there may not be an obvious warning that the fuel pump is failing, some potential signs could include:
- Displaying check engine or other warning lights
- Engine stalling or hesitating
- Loss of power while driving
If you experience any of these issues, it is advised to have your vehicle towed to the nearest Genesis dealer to avoid further risks.
What Will Genesis Do to Fix the Issue?
To remedy this fuel pump defect, Genesis retailers will inspect and replace the low-pressure fuel pump assembly in all affected vehicles at no charge, regardless of whether the vehicle is still under warranty.
Hyundai will also reimburse owners for any out-of-pocket expenses incurred to temporarily remedy the recall condition, according to their reimbursement plan filed with NHTSA.
The raw material used for the fuel pump impeller production was changed by the supplier in September 2022 to correct the impeller deformation issue going forward.
When Will Genesis Send Recall Notifications?
Hyundai plans to begin notifying Genesis dealers about the recall on June 18, 2024. Owners of the recalled 2022-2023 Genesis models will receive notification letters by mail with instructions on how to schedule the free repair starting on June 18, 2024 as well.
If you own one of the affected Genesis vehicles, you can also contact the Hyundai Customer Service team at 800-633-5151 and reference the Hyundai recall number 022G for more details on getting your vehicle remedied.
